back from NRLA and going ever since

Last week I got back from NRLA which again was a fantastic celebration of live art. I saw so many great artists and works, colleagues and friends that I’m overwhelmed just thinking about it… This year was the 30th anniversary of NRLA and maybe because of that the sense of community, support and live art family was heightened. What ever the case, it was truly magical and beautiful to be part of it all. I saw just amazing works by Kira O’Reilly, Guillermo Gomez Pena, Marcia Farquhar, Ron Athey, FrenchMottershead and Los Torreznos, and many works that were not mind blowing but important to see such as Forced Entertainment, Sheela Gelani, Kate Stannard, Francesca Steele, Silke Mansholt… to name a few. I also followed a La Pocha Nostra workshop lead by Guillermo Gomez Pena and Roberto Sifuentes at the Univerisity of Glasgow. That was just great. It was also fantastic to see Jennie Klein, Dee Heddon, Lois Keidan, Colin & Debbie, Richard DeDomenici, Ange Taggart, Manuel Vason and the ASFLA partners of course. Like always, it was all really inspiring. Check out the photograph of the NRLA crowd by FrenchMottershead here.

The only thing causing a little bit of a headache was the BA strike which cancelled my flight from Glasgow to London. In the end, I managed to change my flight and fly to London on Monday night, but had to stay overnight at Heathrow and fly to Finland the next day. This was truly exhausting. And with my knee still in recovery, I was pretty fed up dragging my luggage around Heathrow airport in the middle of the night…only to sleep a couple of hours at the airport hotel and get the shuttle bus back to the airport in the early morning hours. Anyway, I managed.

As soon as I landed in Helsinki, Risto Löf from Savon Sanomat newspaper called me and wanted to do an interview because of the prize I received from the regional arts council of North Savo. I didn’t have much time to talk then so when I finally got home I called him back and we did the interview on the phone. I think I was about 1 and half hours at home before rushing to the VB photographic centre to receive my prize. It was a small & cozy little event but at least I got to wear my golden Finsk shoes… This was the second time as I also wore them at the Tramway in Glasgow. They are so comfortable! I must say I find a bit strange the way the regional arts council organizes the prize reception. For one thing, I still haven’t actually ‘received the prize’ but the way they inform about it (or rather the lack of informing about it), invite people to the event (or rather don’t invite people) and celebrated with me was rather dull. Well, luckily Pekka, Anniina & Tatu came by later and we had some champagne.

Last week, weekend and this week have been very busy at the ANTI Festival office. I’ve spent a lot of time on the proposals, skyping with Gregg, thinking about the programme, organizing the annual association meeting etc. Luckily Kaisa started her work last week as the producer of 2010 festival. I think we’ll make a great team. There’s so much work at the moment that I’m all the time tempted to jump to work but I need to take these Easter days easy as I’ve worked the last two weekends. Yesterday I forced myself to finish my tax papers from 2009. It took me 7 hours. I’ve always hated doing the tax papers but especially now that the regional tax office of North Savo has refused to accept physical training costs as part of a freelance dance artist’s professional costs I’ve kind of lost faith in the Finnish tax system & authorities.

Although things at the ANTI office have been exciting and interesting, I’ve been a bit concerned because I haven’t had time & energy to exercise much. It’s ok for a week or two but cannot become routine. So I’ve been catching up with exercising and it’s all gone pretty well. Last week I also returned the crutches that I had borrowed from the health care centre of Kuopio. The day before yesterday I walked 8.3km and today 8km. These are the first ‘longer’ walks I’ve done after the surgery (I know they are not that long but keeping in mind that I had a ACL surgery 7 weeks ago it’s not that bad). Probably many people don’t recognize anything strange in my walking but I know it’s far from ‘normal’. I cannot fully straighten the knee or push from the left foot they way I can from the other one and especially after a while, this shows in slight limping. The first hour of walking went on both days pretty well but after that the knee starts to feel a bit unstable and wobbly. Yesterday I went to the gym to do some strengthening exercises and also cycled on an exercise bike for 25mins and 15mins on the cross trainer. So I think the knee is definitely getting better, I just have to be patient with it. It’s great to be able to walk outside now that the ice has melted from the streets and there’s no danger of slipping and falling. But for now I can only dream of running. I was so envious of people who went by me running or jogging. I just wanted to shout ‘I also would be running hadn’t I had a knee surgery 7 weeks ago!’ Anyway, I think it’s soon time to find my bicycle from the storage and repair it for another spring-summer-autumn season of cycling.

Tomorrow I need to prepare for next week’s works as I’m involved in many things. But it’s great to be back at work, much nicer than being stuck at home with an injury.

So, the date of my knee operation is confirmed. In less than a week it’s going to operated and I’ll finally know what kind of damage exactly happened in the third Acts of Clothing performance in November. I feel relieved but also a bit frightened. Depending what needs to be done in order to fix the knee, also determines the length of the recovering process.
The other really terrifying thing is that I have so much work to do and I don’t understand how will I be able to meet all the deadlines and complete all the mandatory work related things in just a few days before going into the surgery. Arghhh…

On Thursday I spoke in a seminar focusing on cultural management and producing cultural events In Jyväskylä. It was really inspiring and exciting and we had a very good conversation in the end. There were many students who study arts management and they were so sweet with their questions. Yesterday I also met Kaisa who will start working with me on ANTI Festival in April. I’m so much looking forward to that! I think we’ll make a good team.

Last week in Helsinki was also very very inspiring. It was simply great to be on the course focusing on international touring and look at the different requirements and aspects of it. I was also inspired by the many conversations among colleagues and it was great to sense the feeling of common concerns, aims and visions. The days were very full, besides the course I had arranged meetings with several collaborators and managed to see some work as well.

Whilst in Helsinki, I also quickly popped in Asuna and in Minna Parikka’s boutique with Maija. And I didn’t buy anything! The shoes I fancied didn’t fit my foot at all and in Asuna the trousers I fell in love with were soooooo expensive that I managed to stay sane and keep my credit card in the wallet. Yesterday I visited the lovely Minzi store in Jyväskylä and didn’t buy anything either. They had some great shoes (but not the right size) and inspiring 2OR+YYAT clothes but they were not really my style. I wish they’ve had the new collection of Finsk shoes but they hadn’t arrived as yet… And that was probably very good as I won’t be able to wear super high heels for a while after the knee operation.

the days in Helsinki

On Thursday & Friday I was working in Helsinki and had meetings with different people and institutions. I think it was really useful and also inspiring.
This week I got the first versions of documentation dvds from Acts of Clothing and BODY/HAIR performances. Both look good but I should find time & energy to work on the subtitles. It’s a job I would happily give to someone else. I also don’t know what to do with the full documentation of the Acts of Clothing as it is almost non-stop talking for almost an hour and half…
But during my short visit to Helsinki, I had a chance to visit some of my favourite restaurants and design shops as well as the Christmas market in Vanha where I found a very nice present for my son. I finally saw the new Lustwear shop on Bulevardi. It was great to meet Hammi, one of the designers & owners, as she was in the shop when I visited. They had a few just amazing coats which I didn’t even want to try as I seriously can’t buy anything like that at the moment. And if I try something just perfect on, there’s a chance that I lose the battle with myself and take out the credit card… So I bought just a little Christmas present for myself. The next day I run into Hammi and Maikku, the other designer & owner, in Stockman and we had a nice chat. I haven’t seen those ladies for some time now. It was great to see them and items from their new collection. I highly recommend.
I didn’t visit Minna Parikka’s shop or Asuna, but I quickly went into Helsinki10. I was happy to find products of No Bad Design in there as well as jewellery made out of old toys (I cannot remember the designer). I had almost forgotten that I have a No Bad Design bracelet! And my daughter has fallen in love with the toy jewellery so I have bought a piece for her for Christmas. The Ethic shop is Kuopio sells them. Before taking my train back home, I visited the Mac Store where I bought I few items I needed for my new Mac Book Pro and also decided to visit the Nanso shop. They had some nice example single pieces in very good price and I ended up buying a black & red Love Cats top and a dress  … But they were very cheap!

On Friday I had a nostalgic latte in Café Entré in Kruunuhaka. So many times I’ve sat there before going to the ministry of education or the arts council of Finland. Then I had a lovely lunch in Mai Thai and bought take away sushi for the train journey back home. The train trip was really strange as opposite of me sat the most hysterical or ADHD woman that I’ve ever seen. For the whole four hours, she packed and unpacked, sat and stood up to search through her 8 or so bags, she constantly also changed her place to sit and had everything, literally everything packed in plastic bags including her lip balm! She was all hot and red on the face from all the hassle she just couldn’t stop. She seemed very nice and friendly but she was so restless that I would go crazy if I had to spend a day with a person like that. Tomorrow is hopefully my last day of working in the ANTI office this year. I’m really looking forward to that!

le weekend!

After the Acts of Clothing performances I’ve been feeling rather exhausted, but happy and content. Despite the fact that in the third performance I had a knee injury and did the last two shows sitting in a wheelchair, Marcia assisting me. It was rather tiring but we quickly decided that we won’t cancel the last performances and in a very short time figured out a way to do the shows in the best possible way in the unforeseen circumstances. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and I’m excited about the upcoming possibilities to do the show in different festivals and venues in the future.

But this all has eaten up my energy! Of course the thing with the knee is a nightmare. I’m dealing with the insurance company at the moment and waiting to get a magnetic scan which will determine what happens next. Day by day I can walk better, with less pain, so I’m not desperate. But it is really strange not to be able to go for runs or nordic walks! I’m very worried about my fitness…

In the last performance I got 36 pink flowers from Marcia to celebrate my age and the number of my clothing items in the performance. I also got amazing flowers from the Regional dance centre of Eastern Finland the regional arts council of North Savo. They all still delight me every day! After the last show I wanted to have a party to celebrate the fact that Acts of Clothing might be last work I ever make. I didn’t really manage as the performance preparations and then the sudden injury ate up my energy and I didn’t have time to organize anything properly. But we had a nice time, some food and lots of cava… We also went out and on the next day I had a hangover from hell. But I’ve never been pushed around in a wheelchair through the city from bar to bar before ! At least it was an experience.

36 pink roses

So this is it for a while. I’m not going to make any new work in 2010 but hopefully tour the existing works and focus on developing the ANTI Festival, research new ways of working and collaborating and do some further studies. For a long time I haven’t felt this excited and happy!

To reward myself for all the hard work I ordered two skull bracelets & earrings by Tarina Tarantino. Marcia had the bracelets and I absolutely fell in love with them. So they are a memory of this wonderful collaboration and performance, which I’ve had the best time performing.

on the catwalk…

I’ve now performed Acts of Clothing three times and have two more shows coming up next week. It’s a really great work to perform; it’s lots of fun and the form allows great freedom, spontaniety and interaction with the audience. So I tell different anecdots depending who is in the audience and today was a really nice mixture of young and a bit older people, kids, students, artists and people who I have no idea who they were. And Marcia was great, telling the story with her leopard fake fur coat in the end.

So tomorrow is a day off from performing, then on Tuesday & Wednesday I’m back on the catwalk. How exciting.

Acts of Clothing premiere approaching…

Marcia is arriving tomorrow and I’m so much looking forward to discussing the final questions, issues, concerns and details that I have about my upcoming Acts of Clothing performance. And I’m so delighted to get Marcia to spend a couple of weeks in Kuopio – at least some light in the otherwise grey November! I’m so grateful, happy and blessed about our collaboration and in fact, I think it has saved me from depression and got me going all through the autumn.
So here we are. I have a radio interview tomorrow morning, then I’m teaching in the evening and Saturday all day. I’m showing my performance for Marcia for the first time on Saturday morning and I’m so excited to hear what she says. And also scared. My live art students will be there, too. On Sunday we’ll be working on the lights, the catwalk and stuff like that. And on Monday morning we have a press conference together.
Marcia is bringing along her famous flamenco dress, 12 Shooters film and a booklet about the Acts of Clothing which will be published on the occasion of my Acts of Clothing. Marcia might appear as a very special guest in my performances –we’ll see.

I very much hope to see you in the shows.

ACTS OF CLOTHING

The upcoming show…

ACTS OF CLOTHING 1

Marcia Farquhar is delighted to have been invited by the highly esteemed Johanna Tuukkanen to come to Finland for a performance of her acclaimed Acts of Clothing. This performance will however be altogether different and exactly the same as anything hitherto presented… It will be the same conceptually, one woman alone on a catwalk with her wardrobe spanning a lifetime and telling stories prompted by the garments. But altogether different in that Tuukkanen will present her own outfits, her own associations and above all her tales will be told mostly in Finnish, in her own (mother) tongue.

Coming, or going, back to Finland to direct a performance in a language she doesn’t understand entirely fits the absurdity attendant to translation so important to Farquhar, who in 2000 made a piece of work with her husband Jem Finer, for a tram in Helsinki. ‘O is Rocket, H is for Shark’ was a word play in 25 acts in which the artists pondered the pain and pleasure of translation. Acts of Clothing similarly interrogates the pain and pleasure of getting dressed…

“I’ve gotten to know Marcia Farquhar during my visits to the National Review of Live Art in Scotland over the past ten years. Her extravagant appearance, outstanding charisma and audacious complaints that as the artistic director I had rejected her proposals to perform at ANTI Festival, made me fall in love with her way before I saw her perform which wasn’t until 2007. Her performance Acts of Clothing left an imprint for life. Seeing this gorgeous woman on a catwalk sharing a life time of clothing, memories and incidents related to them, dressing and undressing, was a performance I simply adored. After the performance I said to Daniel Brine, then a co-director of the Live Art Development Agency in London, now the director of Performance Space in Sydney, that I would love to perform that score with my clothes, my past, my history. Daniel loved the idea and later that year I had the courage to approach Marcia with this concept. She immediately said yes, so here we are.

Although Marcia did call this invitation a kind of consolation prize (as supposed to being invited to the ANTI Festival) in one of our encounters at the NRLA, for me this is everything but consolation. Marcia has very generously followed and commented on my working process. It is a scary idea to attempt to perform a score created and performed by such a brilliant performer and a star but like Marcia puts it: You must not be worried about the clothing performance AT ALL. One of the most ingenious things you have done is to suggest you perform it and invite me to “hand it on” in person, that is very good and very FLUXUS and it will be marvelous whatever it is and as it is over some nights it can be different each night or the same. It is a very flexible form. This should only cause you excitement. Happy terror like going on a rollercoaster but better, not so fixed.” Johanna Tuukkanen

Welcome!

City of Women

It was great to visit the City of Women Festival in Ljubljana. Saw some interesting work, met great artists and friends and got to spend a few days in a new city. Diamanda Galas’s concert was fantastic, as well as Alejanda Herrera Silva’s performance. It was also amazing to learn about the work of Regina Jóse Galindo, Nahomi Ximenez, Via Negativa and Nataša Živković. And had great talks with Jennie Klein and the artistic director of the festival Mara Vujić. On the last day of the festival we also had a really good and efficient meeting with A Space for Live Art partners so I’m all happy about the trip.

Brought back Slovenian salt and chocolate. Walked a lot. Didn’t run with the painful knee.

After returning home I’ve realized I have an enormous amount of work ahead of me. This and the upcoming week I’m performing BODY/HAIR, the week after it’s soft skin / harsh life and then it’s all about the ACTS OF CLOTHING. Really wanted to visit Performa but I really don’t think it’s possible in any way. Unfortunately.

Today I went for a run and rehearsed air acrobatics for BODY/HAIR. Feel really exhausted now.

I ordered new running shoes. Need to do something about the oddly painful knee I’ve never had before.

See you in the BODY/HAIR performances.

on Acts of Clothing

Many people have been interested in the Acts of Clothing performance and its working process so I thought I write something about it.

I’ve gotten to know Marcia Farquhar during my visits to the National Review of Live Art in Scotland over the past ten years. Seeing this gorgeous woman on a catwalk sharing a lifetime of clothing, memories and incidents related to them, dressing and undressing, was a performance I simply adored.

It is a scary idea to attempt to perform a score created and performed by such a brilliant performer and a star but like Marcia puts it: ‘You must not be worried about the clothing performance AT ALL. One of the most ingenious things you have done is to suggest you perform it and invite me to “hand it on” in person, that is very good and very FLUXUS and it will be marvelous whatever it is and as it is over some nights it can be different each night or the same. It is a very flexible form. This should only cause you excitement. Happy terror like going on a rollercoaster but better, not so fixed.’

So how have we worked? Marcia has handed the concept for me to use and basically, I’ve gone through my wardrobe at home and the storages in my parents’ house to find items that I wore at different ages and times. Then I’ve adapted a semiotician’s position and wrote kind of essays of each item in which I tried to consider what each had represented not only in my personal history but a wider social history. I’ve sent these ‘essays’ to Marcia who then has commented and encouraged me to get deeper into some of the themes. So this we have done via email. At one point I was being very insistent that Marcia should come and work with me during the autumn but partly due to our clashing schedules, it didn’t happen. But also, Marcia has been quite persistent that I have to make the work mine. As supposed to directing the actual performance, she calls it ‘over seeing’ it. So although I got the documentation dvd of her performance at the NRLA (which I’ve watched once), Marcia has kept saying that I don’t have to feel obliged to do as she did. Also in her emails she has reminded me all the time that I don’t have to do what she says or suggests. So I’ve stuck to her score and felt quite open to work within it. I’m also working a lot on letting go – trying to flexible with the material so that the performance can vary each night. So probably on some nights there will be more text than on others, sometimes the stories can go deeper and further and sometimes there might be more silence. Sometimes the stuff might be more fun, sometimes more tragic and sad.

So my Acts of Clothing performance will be altogether different and exactly the same as anything hitherto presented… It will be the same conceptually, one woman alone on a catwalk with her wardrobe spanning a lifetime and telling stories prompted by the garments… But altogether different in that I will present my own outfits, my own associations and above all her tales will be told mostly in Finnish, in my own (mother) tongue.

I’ve added a few new items and next I have to spend time working with them. Also some images and press material have to be done. So yes, a lot of work that still needs to be done. Marcia will be in Kuopio for about two weeks working with me in November. I’m really looking forward to that as it she has been an amazing support and inspiration.
