busy autumn days

Days and weeks just fly past as I’m so busy with the upcoming ANTI Festival, planning my new production, training and just the normal daily life. I caught again some kind of virus and have a flue which is really annoying. It’s not very bad at the moment and I went to quite hard functional training on Friday and Nordic walking today. I also have a Kinesis training today. I hope the flue doesn’t get worse. I was planning to have a dinner with Rosie Dennis tonight but Rosie, who arrived in Kuopio yesterday, had also woken up with a sore throat so we decided to dine another day. But I’m really looking forward to meeting Rosie tomorrow! It’s more than a year ago since I last saw her.

Yesterday I quickly popped into town to see if the local Marimekko shop had this skirt.

Those of you who have seen my Acts of Clothing performance know that I have mixed feelings about Marimekko but there are usually one or two items in their collections that I like. And the Marimekko shops in Kuopio NEVER have them. I don’t understand who makes the choices what they buy in and on what basis! So I already knew yesterday that they won’t have the skirt or that it would be very unlikely that they would, but just to be a pain in the ass, I went and asked anyway. And of course the answer was no. So not much reasons to visit the shops…

On Thursday I finally got my green coat from the dressmaker where it was fixed. It’s a coat I’ve bought in Stavanger, Norway, some years ago but it never really suited me. It was too long and the buttons were strange and one of them came off etc. So as I was feeling fed up with my worn out black coat, I suddenly remembered that maybe something could be done to the green coat to make it wearable. So it was shortened, buttons were changed and more buttons added. And now I love it! I will take a picture of it soon and post it here. The green is rather intense and I’m sure some people will hate it. But I’m really into it. In fact, I bought a pair of Wolford’s green tights to match the coat. And I’m sure it will look great with the United Nude Fold shoes that Gregg in bringing me from London. I can hardly wait!

Oh, last week I was again asked to become a candidate for the parliament election but I said no. I’m honored to be considered a candidate but it’s really not on my agenda, maybe some day, but not now.

Anyway, another crazily busy week ahead but so exciting. It’s almost ANTI time with an amazing selection of international artists and w wonderful conference and seminar programme. I’m sooooo much looking forward to it all.

Hope to see you all around.

Jee!

Lumene is back with a loose powder, this time translucent mineral powder! I haven’t tried it yet but refuse to think that it wouldn’t be at least as good as the old loose powder. To my total surprise, I learned some time ago that Lumene had stopped making the loose powder, which I had used for years both in my private life as well as on stage. Occasionally, I tired other loose powders as well (Chanel, Dior, Blasco…), but always came back to Lumene. So I was shocked and didn’t know what to do. I tried Chanel, Max Factor and the latest try was Loreal but I wasn’t satisfied! So when I was in Helsinki, complaining to my friend Maija how badly the Loreal powder was doing the job, she later texted me that Lumene is back with a new mineral loose powder. So today when I quickly popped into town and Anttila’s second floor, I looked if the powder was there and yes it was. I didn’t hesitate for a minute. There was also a Lumene representative in the shop (wearing Nanso’s dress) and I quickly told her how devastated I had been when they stopped making the loose powder. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one as they had received so many complaints that now they finally came back with a new one. I’m not a total fan of Lumene but there are a few products I do like, for example the Time Freeze Instant Lift Serum. Today, inspired by the powder and the representative, for the first time I bought their Wild Rose Lipstick in a new wonderful vintage red color called Joy of Brightness. I’ve only tested it tonight but feels good.

In Helsinki I met with my web master and discussed about updating the site. One thing I’ve been thinking a lot is whether I should remove the blog from the site and have it somewhere separately. He and few other people I’ve talked about it with, think that I should keep the blog on this site (we will remove it from the front page, though). They say that my life is my work and my work is often about the everyday, the observations about the everyday, the small and sometimes insignificant things that occur, happen and I come across. But it is exactly posts like this that I’m hesitating to post on this site! I’m very conscious of writing about my interest and inspiration of design –weather it’s about design of furniture, cutlery, clothes or shoes-, fashion, traveling etc. People have such strong views of high & low art although it is often exactly that boarder that my work also touches…

Anyway, in Helsinki I also had a heated discussion with one choreographer whether my work is dance. Maybe more about that in another post!

Riga & Cesis & Helsinki

Last week I spent five days in Latvia. First I had two days off which I spent with Pekka in Riga and then we travelled to Cesis for the Cesis Art Festival and Care to Create conference where I gave a talk / discussion with Eric de Visscher.
The contemporary are festival was a great experience and I enjoyed both the programme and the conference a lot. And it was wonderful to meet so many collegues from Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Iceland. The opening of the festival including the concert of contemporary music titled Joy was a real experience.

Right after returning from Latvia, I travelled to Helsinki to work with Gregg and Laura on the ANTI Festival. Despite the heat, we had a great time. By surprise, we also found Gregg telling stories about Bob Dylan in the exhibition in Kiasma! That was part of Johanna Lecklin’s Story Café which has also been shown at ANTI. There were actually quite a few ANTI artists in the exhibition; Antti Laitinen, Eeva-Mari Haikala, Seppo Rennvall, Marja Mikkonen…

Now I’ve been preparing for my ACTS OF CLOTHING performance at the Full Moon Dance Festival in Pyhäjärvi where I’m off tomorrow. It’s been rather sweaty – the all time heat record of Finland was beaten today, +37,2 celcius degree…

days in Hamburg

I’ve been the last three days in Hamburg spending most of my time in the Live Art Festival in Kampnagel. We’ve had A Space Live for Art project meetings about both the artistic and administrational side and today I held a lecture/workshop about artistic interventions in public space to the network of Young Performance Art Lovers. I’ve also seen some great performances by Ivo Dimchev, Ivana Muller, Liquid Loft, Rotozaza and an installation by the Forsythe Company.

questions & my answers

I will be participating in a conference as part of the Cesis art festival in Riga in July. I was asked by the organizers to answer a few questions about my views and ideas. Here are the questions and my short answers.

1.    Could you suggest 3 most important issues that characterize contemporary visual arts / academic music?

– The everyday

– The artists’ willingness, need – almost a yearn- to create and engage in projects that involve different communities, people from various social backgrounds across all ages.

– Creating concepts

2.    Why these issues?

To me it seems that instead of grand ideas visions and utopian ideas, many contemporary artists are creating works and projects that stem from the ‘everyday’ and the mundane. This can be visible in many different ways; the works’ thematic can be related to everyday life such as family or work, the works or projects themselves are located in the midst of the ‘everyday’ i.e. the work is not necessarily sited somewhere where it can immediately be understood as art, the works’ materials are everyday like, often ecological issues are very well considered and thought of as part of the work etc.

Often in projects and works created in collaboration with or by different communities stretch out of the so called art spaces to various everyday spaces, streets, blogs, youth centres, forests etc. It seems that to get and have the attention of the art community and art scene is not satisfying enough and artists really do want to reach and work with people who might have no previous knowledge or experience of contemporary art.

I also think that there is a tendency towards creating non material works & projects, ephemeral works that live in the minds and memories of the participants and witnesses of the works or for example in the world wide web instead of creating huge material objects or big performative spectacles that require a lot of material and technical support.

Let me know what you think.

busy days at the ANTI office

Last weeks have been so busy and I’ve felt pretty exhausted. I’ve been every morning by 8am in the ANTI office working with Kaisa on the programme details but of course there’s always something extra going on as well. I finished the educational live art projects around the Acts of Clothing and I participated with Kaisa in the ömeising reis event last Tuesday where I led a live art session for 150 students. I’ve also been trying to keep up my exercise routine but it’s been a challenge since I’ve been so busy. But I’ve done pretty well… walking, training on the cross trainer and an exercise bike…
Today I visited the Iittala outlet store in Hirvaskangas and was so inspired by the designs, the colours, the products! A few weeks ago I got obsessed with the idea of frozen margarita and after a sunny day I just had to go and buy these Essence bowl glasses and make my first frozen margaritas ever.
Essence bowl
By the way, the glasses were cheaper in the local Citymarket than in the Iittala outlet store. Strange. Anyway, I didn’t buy anything today but I fell in love with the pink Essence pitcher. But since I already have the turquoise one  I couldn’t buy it.
By the way, I noticed today that the Sagaform’s herb pot is on sale in Euromarket. I think I might go and get a few tomorrow.

back from NRLA and going ever since

Last week I got back from NRLA which again was a fantastic celebration of live art. I saw so many great artists and works, colleagues and friends that I’m overwhelmed just thinking about it… This year was the 30th anniversary of NRLA and maybe because of that the sense of community, support and live art family was heightened. What ever the case, it was truly magical and beautiful to be part of it all. I saw just amazing works by Kira O’Reilly, Guillermo Gomez Pena, Marcia Farquhar, Ron Athey, FrenchMottershead and Los Torreznos, and many works that were not mind blowing but important to see such as Forced Entertainment, Sheela Gelani, Kate Stannard, Francesca Steele, Silke Mansholt… to name a few. I also followed a La Pocha Nostra workshop lead by Guillermo Gomez Pena and Roberto Sifuentes at the Univerisity of Glasgow. That was just great. It was also fantastic to see Jennie Klein, Dee Heddon, Lois Keidan, Colin & Debbie, Richard DeDomenici, Ange Taggart, Manuel Vason and the ASFLA partners of course. Like always, it was all really inspiring. Check out the photograph of the NRLA crowd by FrenchMottershead here.

The only thing causing a little bit of a headache was the BA strike which cancelled my flight from Glasgow to London. In the end, I managed to change my flight and fly to London on Monday night, but had to stay overnight at Heathrow and fly to Finland the next day. This was truly exhausting. And with my knee still in recovery, I was pretty fed up dragging my luggage around Heathrow airport in the middle of the night…only to sleep a couple of hours at the airport hotel and get the shuttle bus back to the airport in the early morning hours. Anyway, I managed.

As soon as I landed in Helsinki, Risto Löf from Savon Sanomat newspaper called me and wanted to do an interview because of the prize I received from the regional arts council of North Savo. I didn’t have much time to talk then so when I finally got home I called him back and we did the interview on the phone. I think I was about 1 and half hours at home before rushing to the VB photographic centre to receive my prize. It was a small & cozy little event but at least I got to wear my golden Finsk shoes… This was the second time as I also wore them at the Tramway in Glasgow. They are so comfortable! I must say I find a bit strange the way the regional arts council organizes the prize reception. For one thing, I still haven’t actually ‘received the prize’ but the way they inform about it (or rather the lack of informing about it), invite people to the event (or rather don’t invite people) and celebrated with me was rather dull. Well, luckily Pekka, Anniina & Tatu came by later and we had some champagne.

Last week, weekend and this week have been very busy at the ANTI Festival office. I’ve spent a lot of time on the proposals, skyping with Gregg, thinking about the programme, organizing the annual association meeting etc. Luckily Kaisa started her work last week as the producer of 2010 festival. I think we’ll make a great team. There’s so much work at the moment that I’m all the time tempted to jump to work but I need to take these Easter days easy as I’ve worked the last two weekends. Yesterday I forced myself to finish my tax papers from 2009. It took me 7 hours. I’ve always hated doing the tax papers but especially now that the regional tax office of North Savo has refused to accept physical training costs as part of a freelance dance artist’s professional costs I’ve kind of lost faith in the Finnish tax system & authorities.

Although things at the ANTI office have been exciting and interesting, I’ve been a bit concerned because I haven’t had time & energy to exercise much. It’s ok for a week or two but cannot become routine. So I’ve been catching up with exercising and it’s all gone pretty well. Last week I also returned the crutches that I had borrowed from the health care centre of Kuopio. The day before yesterday I walked 8.3km and today 8km. These are the first ‘longer’ walks I’ve done after the surgery (I know they are not that long but keeping in mind that I had a ACL surgery 7 weeks ago it’s not that bad). Probably many people don’t recognize anything strange in my walking but I know it’s far from ‘normal’. I cannot fully straighten the knee or push from the left foot they way I can from the other one and especially after a while, this shows in slight limping. The first hour of walking went on both days pretty well but after that the knee starts to feel a bit unstable and wobbly. Yesterday I went to the gym to do some strengthening exercises and also cycled on an exercise bike for 25mins and 15mins on the cross trainer. So I think the knee is definitely getting better, I just have to be patient with it. It’s great to be able to walk outside now that the ice has melted from the streets and there’s no danger of slipping and falling. But for now I can only dream of running. I was so envious of people who went by me running or jogging. I just wanted to shout ‘I also would be running hadn’t I had a knee surgery 7 weeks ago!’ Anyway, I think it’s soon time to find my bicycle from the storage and repair it for another spring-summer-autumn season of cycling.

Tomorrow I need to prepare for next week’s works as I’m involved in many things. But it’s great to be back at work, much nicer than being stuck at home with an injury.

Johanna

I’ve tried to keep up my regular exercising regime but it’s really not working very well. In each training session, there are movements which the knee cannot support and it kind of collapses – and this is very painful. This also happened today in the worst possible way (and I wasn’t even training) and I fell very badly. The knee hurt so badly that I cried like a baby, lay on the floor and wept with ice on the knee. Not good. I’m so sick of not having heard again from the insurance company and this whole case is just dragging further and further.

I will call the insurance company tomorrow. I actually tried to call them today (before I had fallen) but didn’t reach the right person. If I’ve ever had any trust to any insurance company, I really don’t anymore.

My home ‘gym’…

Otherwise I’ve been busy working on ANTI Festival. The call out for ANTI Festival 2010 is now open so check it out if you are interested in applying.

Another interesting position is open in the Regional Dance Centre of Eastern Finland. More information in Finnish available here.

le weekend!

After the Acts of Clothing performances I’ve been feeling rather exhausted, but happy and content. Despite the fact that in the third performance I had a knee injury and did the last two shows sitting in a wheelchair, Marcia assisting me. It was rather tiring but we quickly decided that we won’t cancel the last performances and in a very short time figured out a way to do the shows in the best possible way in the unforeseen circumstances. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and I’m excited about the upcoming possibilities to do the show in different festivals and venues in the future.

But this all has eaten up my energy! Of course the thing with the knee is a nightmare. I’m dealing with the insurance company at the moment and waiting to get a magnetic scan which will determine what happens next. Day by day I can walk better, with less pain, so I’m not desperate. But it is really strange not to be able to go for runs or nordic walks! I’m very worried about my fitness…

In the last performance I got 36 pink flowers from Marcia to celebrate my age and the number of my clothing items in the performance. I also got amazing flowers from the Regional dance centre of Eastern Finland the regional arts council of North Savo. They all still delight me every day! After the last show I wanted to have a party to celebrate the fact that Acts of Clothing might be last work I ever make. I didn’t really manage as the performance preparations and then the sudden injury ate up my energy and I didn’t have time to organize anything properly. But we had a nice time, some food and lots of cava… We also went out and on the next day I had a hangover from hell. But I’ve never been pushed around in a wheelchair through the city from bar to bar before ! At least it was an experience.

36 pink roses

So this is it for a while. I’m not going to make any new work in 2010 but hopefully tour the existing works and focus on developing the ANTI Festival, research new ways of working and collaborating and do some further studies. For a long time I haven’t felt this excited and happy!

To reward myself for all the hard work I ordered two skull bracelets & earrings by Tarina Tarantino. Marcia had the bracelets and I absolutely fell in love with them. So they are a memory of this wonderful collaboration and performance, which I’ve had the best time performing.

post festival blues

It’s been a week since the ANTI Festival finished. It was probably the best festival ever –partly because of the length of the festival and number of artists involved which really made an impact to the city but I was especially satisfied with the programme this year. Of course, as an organizer there are always areas of improvement, but the overall level of the programme was very high this year. Also the seminar was great. I felt so proud of these amazing artists, academics, guests and visitors who all gathered to Kuopio to create the festival. I want to say thank you to each and every one of you. And especially I want to thank Gregg with whom it’s such a pleasure to collaborate.

ANTI squirrel 09

As usual, after the intense festival period, everything feels flat. I always get very emotional after the festival when all the exhaustion, pressure and expectation begin to ease off. For a couple of days I was just in tears. But by now I’ve learned that that’s part of it, part of the festival experience and although it feels tough each year, it’s something that will surely but slowly pass.

Luckily there were other things that kept me busy last week. Application deadlines, meetings, runs, exercising, other performances and reviews.

Part of me hates when the brisk but colourful autumn begins to get colder and rainier but a few days ago I had such a blissful 10k run and today an easy Nordic walk that I cannot complain. Yes, it’s quite cold but it didn’t rain on me. And yes, we are in the North, on the edge of Europe.

Next week I’m back to Acts of Clothing and very excited about it!
